I generally do not like “How-To” books.  I find them boring and often tedious.

However, I do enjoy reading interesting stories written by people who have actually lived the principles they are talking about.  Folks that put their theories to the test in the real world of business, family and community inspire me.

I feel the same way about managing people.  I do not like to manage people, probably because I do not like to be managed myself.  Being managed feels like I am being handled or manipulated somehow. On the other hand, I really enjoy leading people in projects that are worthy of our collective talents and experiences.  I also enjoy being lead by a visionary Pastor or teacher.  Leadership is high on my value scale.

I bring these issues up because these leadership lessons are about my life and what I believe it takes to be a world-class entrepreneur these days.  With the advent of social media, Internet commerce, world-wide terrorism, pandemics and all the myriad distractions we face, I thought it was time that someone got real about the inspiration and motivation it takes to earn your spurs as an effective entrepreneur.

Almost anyone can start and run a company.  That is not what entrepreneurship means to me.  For me it is about making contributions to your family, community, business and self in the process of growing the enterprise.  The old notion of “Get what you can, Can what you get, and Sit on the can” just doesn’t cut it with me.  I mean no disrespect to folks who are happy to use others to get what they want, but I simply don’t believe it has to me that way.

These lessons are dedicated to all of the hard-working entrepreneurs who dare to lead from the front and by example, sharing their hard-earned knowledge with those coming behind, and who never stop asking “What’s next?”
